Wellness Exams for Pets of All Ages
Wellness exams are important for pets of all ages and sizes. Learn more about what is included in these exams below.
Adopting a new puppy or kitten is such an exciting time! But it can also be filled with questions and anxieties as you try to navigate all their needs and help them transition into their new life with your family. At Sunflower Veterinary Center, we will take the time you need to answer all your questions and help you create a preventive care plan for your pet. Puppies and kittens can be fragile in their first year and need sufficient protection from disease and infection.
During your puppy’s or kitten’s visit, we’ll cover the following treatments and topics:
- A thorough examination that includes checking for congenital disorders
- Initial vaccinations based on your pet’s level of risk
- Fecal screening for intestinal parasites
- Feline Leukemia and Immunodeficiency Testing (feline only)
- Heartworm, intestinal parasite, and flea and tick prevention
- Discussion about behavioral concerns
- Nutrition/dietary recommendations
- An overview of pet insurance and how it can benefit you and your pet
When your pet reaches a year old (or 2 years, in the case of giant breed dogs), their nutritional needs will change. In addition to addressing their diet, we will also need to make sure your pet is on the right track with their vaccinations and staying healthy and well-protected from disease overall.
At Sunflower Veterinary Center, we recommend seeing your pet for a wellness visit at least once to twice a year to stay on top of their care and detect potential health issues before they can become full-blown problems. This becomes increasingly important as your pet ages.
Points of discussion during your adult pet’s wellness exam will include:
- A full physical examination
- Vaccinations based on your pet’s needs and risks
- Fecal screening for intestinal parasites
- Heartworm/tick-borne disease testing (dogs only)
- Possible breed-specific testing for congenital/developmental conditions
- Nutrition recommendations to maintain a healthy weight
- Parasite prevention
- Dental cleanings, if necessary
- An overview of pet insurance and how it can benefit you and your pet
- Any questions or concerns you may have
Dogs and cats become increasingly at risk for medical conditions as they age, just like humans do. Your pet’s lifestyle and nutritional needs will also change once they reach their senior years. Furthermore, because they can’t tell us how they’re feeling, your pet should see us for biannual exams (every 6 months) so we can monitor their health more closely and check for subtle changes that might indicate an underlying problem.
Senior pet exams typically include:
- A thorough examination in which we check for age- and breed-related disorders
- Vaccinations, based on their level of risk
- Fecal screening for intestinal parasites
- Heartworm/tick-borne disease testing (dogs only)
- Recommended senior bloodwork and other diagnostics for breed-specific disorders
- Nutrition recommendations to maintain a healthy weight
- Arthritis/pain assessment with management recommendations if needed
- Parasite prevention
- Dental cleanings, if necessary
- A discussion to address any concerns or questions you have
